Honda CR-V Overview & Transmission

Great looks, spacious interior and feature laden cabin makes CR-V a desirable model in the premium SUV space. Lacking a diesel unit in the line-up, CR-V draws power from two petrol engines available with a choice between six-speed manual and 5-speed automatic gearboxes. The lower capacity 2.0 litre petrol engine uses a two-wheel drivetrain as opposed to the 2.4 litre unit mated to the auto box, sending power to all four wheels via a real time 4WD.

Honda CR-V range is spread across three variants, deriving power from 2.0 litre and 2.4 litre petrol units with an option between a manual and an automatic transmission. Priced between Rs 22.2 lakh to Rs 26.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the 2.0 litre variant is available in both manual and automatic versions, whereas the 2.4 litre engine comes paired to the automatic transmission. Use of elements such as chrome garnish, body cladding and vertically stacked tail lamps work well for the exterior profile. On the inside, the SUV accommodates five adults with ample head, leg and shoulder space for passengers seated in front and rear.

The 4th generation CRV is based on the Grand CRV theme. The new vehicle comes with altered dimensions but the overall essence of the CRV has been left untouched. Fog lamp scoops have been redesigned as well.It comes out as a very premium contemporary looking vehicle. The new design is also more aerodynamic compared to the earlier version. The first look at the vehicle from side reminds of some inspiration from the Volvo XC series which is reminiscent at the rear too. On the side profile large 10-spoke 17 inch alloy wheels adds up to the vehicle’s dynamic presence and character.

The company plans to introduce two exterior enhancement kits which are the inspire kit and the elegance kit with the new CRV. These kits will offer different set of enhancement options ranging from stylish radiator grille, chrome tipped exhaust pipe, side step garnish etc etc. When seen from silhouette, the CRV looks more like an extended sedan than an SUV with an extended overhang in the first and the rear half of the vehicle. The door lines are offered in chrome. Rear tail lamps are the class first 3D combination vertically stacked. The rear looks as if pulled out but neatly with a conveniently sized rear windshield. The CRV does not come across as a mighty off roader but then it looks very strong and dynamic. Honda primary focus with the CR-V has been comfort and the fourth generation does not disappoint at all. Ride is plush and the suspension is happy absorbing the craters on the road, ensuring the passengers have no reason to complain. Honda has switched to an electronic power steering (EPS) in the latest model, dumping the hydraulic unit for good and moving towards a more eco-friendly solution. The steering is therefore light and this adds to the sedan like driving character and zipping through traffic is as easy as running a knife through butter. Come high speeds and this EPS unit does not weigh up well and feels a bit numb, however, at no instance does the CR-V feel unstable. Even at tripple digit speeds, this crossover feels well planted on the road and high speed stability is impressive. Driving comfort deserves a special mention, even after driving 350 odd kms, we were as fresh as a daisy with no hint of fatigue.

The all new Honda CR-V has evolved into a much better product all around. The new model offers more room in the cabin with a comfortable driving experience. The feature list has only got longer and you get everything a SUV buyer wants, well almost. Though the new Honda CR-V is a great all rounder, it still lacks what most wish for in the segment, a diesel engine. Though Honda has not ruled out a diesel mill for the CR-V in the future, the current model will sport petrol engines only which could be a turn off for prospective customers in a diesel dominated market. However, with petrol and diesel prices heading towards each other, you never know what happens. For now, lets give credit where its due, Honda has managed to better the CR-V brand in every possible way. This new Honda is available, for the first time, through the CKD route resulting in reduced prices, making it more convincing than it was earlier.
